Amber Sawyer was just 8 years old when it happened.
She was watching cartoons on the living room floor of her Mississippi home when she heard the bang.
She went to investigate and found her 21-year-old sister, Donna, dead in her bed. She had shot herself in the heart with their father’s hunting rifle weeks after being excommunicated by their church for getting engaged to a non-Jehovah’s Witness.

I just lost a friend in Florida to suicide. She was on life support for a few days with no improvement. She was 27. Very, very sad, and she wasn't a victim of a religious cult. Just think of how lost these people feel when they've been kicked out of the only life they've ever known, only for being human. I had a circle of friends outside of the cult. What about those who don't? What about those whose families are deep in and they have nothing left? Who wouldn't feel like they've got nothing left to lose and end it all? It hurts. This is just so sad.
Saturday my honey and I went house hunting for a bit and my mother watched the baby. Before we left, my honey sucked up his feelings towards mom and the religion and talked to her for about an hour and a half about kids, religion, school, etc. At the end he tried, like so many others have, to convince her that I need her and she needs to be a mother FIRST not second. This didn't work, she defended her views, but she did say something surprising...she said that she wants to be the mother that goes shopping with her daughter, go out to eat, gossip and giggle on the phone...but she can't because I've made my decision on how I want to live. She said, and this was the shocking part, that her god (see religion) is disciplining me, but at the same time, SHE is being punished for having a DF daughter. Her life is harder because SHE IS BEING PUNISHED BECAUSE OF HOW THE CULT SEES ME IN RELATION TO HER. She has started to recognize that it isn't right, but she is still so convinced this is the truth that she follows it...

My thoughts are with you MB! You've been battling this for a number of years I know. At least she's willing to pitch in and help with the young ones. (Oh puke! Did I just say "young ones"?) lol.
I know nothing about your relationship with her except what you've shared, but it has occurred to me that she may be acting defiant rather than pious. Some parents have a really hard time ceding control over to their children. But, at some point kids make their own way, and our relationship with them must evolve into a new chapter. Seems to me that she's just not getting that part!
Ha! But that's not going to be the worst part for you! Wait until the kids become all knowing teens!!! Good luck!
Every day people are straying away from the church and going back to god!-Lenny Bruce (1925-1966)
Good point about some JWs being defiant more than or as much as pious. Reckon there's a lot of narcissistic personalities in these high control religions.
Those of us who have not only survived but are thriving since leaving the Watchtower Society should give each other and ourselves high-fives every day. I've had many people tell me over the years how strong I am to have gotten away from the org and made a good life for myself despite a lot of shit that's been thrown in my face.
We've all been there. Congratulations to all of us and more power to us.
