The link that follows is a living document that I occasional update with books and other information that I've found especially helpful in my recovery from JW life. Not all of it will be for everyone, but I hope some of it will be useful to many.
"He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how." - Friedrich Nietzsche "Live as if you were living already for the second time as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now!" - Viktor Frankl
Would Bonnie Zieman's two books, "Fading Out of the JW Cult: A Memoir" and "EXiting the JW Cult: A Healing Handbook: For Current & Former Jehovah's Witnesses", be up to par with being added to your list?
I haven't read either, but have heard of them and looked them up on Amazon.
SUMMARY (copy/pasted from Amazon.com): "More kids are dying right now in obedience to the Jehovah's Witness ban on blood transfusions than perished in the fire at Waco, Texas," says former Witness elder David A. Reed. "How can a major sect with headquarters in New York City and twelve million attending its religious services worldwide quietly lead victims to early deaths without public outcry?" Reed cites dozens of well-documented casesmedia reports naming victims, doctors, and hospitals issuing their death certificatesas he blows the whistle on a deadly cult that secretly instructs members to kidnap children from hospital beds and teaches children to resist doctors violently and give false testimony in court.
This former minister, now widely recognized as an authority on the sect, explains his own role in bringing new members under mind control. With captivating anecdotes he details an enforcement apparatus that reaches even into clinics and hospitals. He brings to light secret instructions for hospital employees to turn over confidential patient records to the church, and tells how the hierarchy conducts bedside trials of members who accept forbidden medical treatment. Reed joined the sect as a naive young adult and rose through the ranks until he learned how the secretive leadership operated. Realizing that his friends were dying for beliefs supposedly channeled from God, but actually fabricated by the church hierarchy. After leaving the sect, he spent years researching its history and activitiesevidence revealed here for the first time. Reed's warning cannot be ignored."
Thank you so much 2bad and coyotesoul, I really need this information so much. I know so little outside of WBTS interpretation of the basics. TB put up some related direction.
It's cool that you ,cs, added onto this thread
because I always look at the latest posts first... what great stuff on the blood prohibition, I believed that one fully, so that brought me here,, and yay! 2badsosad, so much about the Hebrew scripts! I was just formulating in my mind for the past two days, how to ask if anyone could direct me to this very information!
I never could understand how according to the bible God is always claiming to be loving, just, etc. and within the next chapters, boom, one mistake and you're struck down. What about David's sin with the census, then the innocent are forced into a battle and die while David, gets to live as King, no less.
I think a lot of people, not just Jdubs don't get it either.

I thought it might be a good idea to bring up this thread now and then with a new suggestion!
"Understanding makes the anger go away!" someone said. King Solomon I think. Whether or not you believe the bible is true, or in God, this adage holds true. There is nothing more frustrating than having a group of bullies run you over and ruin your life using secret rules and allowing you no recourse. Educating yourself on the human nature behind it, and the processes available for you to use to extricate yourself can help promote inner peace and understanding.
The reading list posted by Toobad, above, is fairly comprehensive. I would like to add to this list!
"Crisis of Conscience" (Ray Franz) is a book written by a former governing body member of JW's, and a long time head of the writing department at Bethel. He was df'd for speaking to his landlord, who was df'd, along with what was reported to be about half of the bethel family in NY during a purge, all branded as apostate. He wrote the book to warn people about this cult. In it he discusses the processes at Bethel and how they came about some of their doctrines. This reading is a must for anyone who wants to understand what's going on behind the smoke and mirrors!
"Combating Cult Mind Control" (Stephen Hassan) This is is a non-fiction work by Steven Hassan described as a "Guide to Protection, Rescue, and Recovery from Destructive Cults." This book explains exactly how cults control your mind, using the latest research from experts. He has a website up now where you can get advice, training, expert witness for court, and other services. He is a former cult member, knows what he's talking about, and knows how to cut the mind control cord. freedomofmind.com/
Feel free to discuss or add to the list!
Every day people are straying away from the church and going back to god!-Lenny Bruce (1925-1966)
Apocalypse Delayed by James Penton (included in the list by 2bad) is a great read on the history of the jw's. It's a history book and might be a bit of a long read, but it's really worth it! Very factual and trying to take an unbiased approach, it's quite the opposite from the watchtower literature describing its own history!

Thinking about it, when I was under the influence of the Koolaid, I had heard plenty about the JW past. I considered it water under the bridge because of "new light". Looking back, now that I'm no longer under the influence, I can see it was a radical cult run by men who's only interest was control. I always thought that the errant views of people decades ago who are now dead mean nothing. All along all those control freaks were refining the wheel of control. Who knew!

Same for me, well maybe I hadn't heard that much per se, but some things just didn't seem to make that much sense. But, light gets brighter.
With the early history of the organization in mind and how different things were, combined with the fact that jw's believe that Jesus chose them as his representatives in 1919, coupled with their view on apostates today: it makes quite a hilarious contradiction. Per jwfacts.com/watchtower/1919-derived.php
If Jesus did inspect Watchtower in 1919, what he found was not a cleansed organisation teaching truth, rather his inspection would have revealed a group promoting that:
* The "Last Days" started in 1799 and the 1800s were the worst time period of all history * Jesus presence commenced in 1874 * Jesus had begun ruling in 1878 * Armageddon had occurred in 1914 * Blood was acceptable as food for Christians * Jesus should be prayed to and worshipped, as well as Jehovah * The Great Crowd were a heavenly class * Birthdays and Christmas were acceptable celebrations * The cross was on the cover of the Watchtower * Teachings adapted from 1800's religious preachers and the Adventist movement, such as that pyramids and astrology supported 1914 * Strong Zionist support for a new nation of Israel in fulfilment of Bible prophecy * The Faithful and Discreet Slave was not the anointed, but rather Pastor Russell
By current standards, in 1919 Watchtower was very much an apostate organization.
