I call my mother, aged 87, every couple of days to visit and see how she's doing. We usually don't talk about religion, but sometimes we do depending on what she's doing when I call.
So it turned out she was writing a letter to my cousin, a devout Baptist. She was reciting the 7 heads, 10 horns prophecy from Revelations, and had their WT identification mixed up. She had tried to look this up on JW.org, and couldn't find the "Revelation Book".
I reminded her that much of the old doctrine she learned in the '60's turned out to be false, or at least declared false. The revelation book was declared invalid, and all of the books written by Ray Franz were declared out of bounds now. She declared that I am "reading apostate websites"! So I told her, no, I got that because I ran across a book he wrote and I recognized the name, Ray Franz, as being one of the governing body. "Crisis of Conscience". In that book, he outlined who was writing the books, and how the decisions about doctrine were made, and how he was framed for apostasy. Due to this, all his writings were declared invalid, taken off the list of acceptable publications. This includes the revelation book and the Aid to Bible Understanding, for instance.
There was silence for a minute, then she admitted that she had heard that he was DF'd for apostasy but didn't know why.
My poor mother is aging and living on her own, and she NEEDS the support of the congregation just to survive. The help her quite a bit (which is really not much, they come visit every now and then and take her grocery shopping, etc.) For this reason she won't leave the congregation. But it sure seems like she's aware of TTATT.
My mother has never had any qualms about compromising her principles if it helps her survive and she won't get caught. I've seen her lie her way out of things my whole life. While it's true she's a hypocrite, it's the way she is, and she's surviving now.
At least I'm not being shunned. That's a good thing.
